Weldon Steel: Building the Future from Halifax County to the East Coast

In celebration of National Manufacturing Day, Week, and Month, we’re highlighting the vital role that manufacturing plays in Halifax County’s economy. Throughout October, the Halifax County Economic Development Commission will share profiles of key industries and leaders who make a difference in our community.

For over three decades, Weldon Steel Corporation has been a pillar in the structural steel fabrication industry, providing high-quality materials for construction of critical projects along the East Coast. Established in 1987, this Halifax County-based company is more than just a business—it’s a vital part of the local community and economy.

Innovation and Adaptability in a Changing Industry – In an ever-evolving construction landscape, Weldon Steel has adapted to shifts in demand by diversifying their portfolio. From providing steel for large commercial projects like the Hilton Garden Inn hotel to specialized infrastructure for the Don Pancho Authentic Mexican Foods manufacturing facility and educational buildings like the UNC-W School of Nursing, Weldon Steel is always prepared to meet market needs. Their adaptability has allowed them to stay competitive and continue growing despite economic challenges.

And the company’s impact goes far beyond structural steel. CEO Kris Neal, a home-grown leader with over 30 years of experience, emphasizes the company’s dedication to fostering local talent. Through internships with ECU and NCSU, Weldon Steel builds relationships with young engineers, ensuring a pipeline of skilled professionals for the future and also gives back to the community by supporting local sports teams and schools.

Leading with a Passion for Quality  – CEO Kris Neal’s leadership is rooted in his commitment to quality and organic growth. With a background in civil engineering from North Carolina State University and an MBA from Virginia Commonwealth University, Kris has steered Weldon Steel toward success by focusing on customer satisfaction and building a team that truly cares. The company’s motto, “Exceeding Expectations,” is evident in every project they undertake, whether it’s a high-profile medical tower in Raleigh or a local school in Weldon.

Looking Ahead – As Weldon Steel continues to grow, its future looks bright. With plans for steady, organic expansion and a commitment to providing exceptional service, Weldon Steel is poised to remain a leader in the steel fabrication industry for years to come. And in a fun twist, the company also prioritizes the well-being of its employees by bringing therapy dogs into the workplace, making it a unique and enjoyable place to work.

Weldon Steel recently marked a significant milestone by acquiring the former Basnight Building in Weldon and expanding its operations there along with a new facility and plate processing center at its main plant on Kennametal Drive. This growth comes alongside recent recognition for the company’s exemplary work on the rebuild of the former QVC distribution center in Rocky Mount. The company’s continued investment in Halifax County strengthens its long-standing commitment to the area, where most of its 54 employees live and contribute.

From humble beginnings to a thriving company that serves major industries across the East Coast, Weldon Steel is a shining example of Halifax County’s industrial strength.
