Halifax County citizens place great emphasis on education. Throughout Halifax County, you’ll find a wide range of high-quality educational opportunities. Students starting in pre-school can progress through high school, vocational and technical training, certificate programs, or secure a four-year college degree without having to leave the area. Excellent libraries and active parental involvement are just two of the reasons why many of our schools and students excel.

Each of these school systems is accredited by the State. In addition to a solid instructional foundation based on courses of study required by the State, many unique programs are offered, including foreign languages, advanced placement courses, cultural arts programs, vocational education, and special student programs such as Roanoke Valley Early College, which allows seventh and eight graders to take college courses.
There are also three private schools: Halifax Academy, Victory Christian Academy, and Littleton Academy.
Also serving the Roanoke Valley is the KIPP-Gaston College Preparatory School. KIPP, based on the Knowledge is Power Program, is a network of free open-enrollment college preparatory public schools throughout the United States. KIPP-Halifax College Preparatory School is an open enrollment college preparatory public school dedicated to preparing students for success in college and life. KIPP Halifax College Prep School offers Kindergarten and first grades and fifth through eighth grade enrollment.
The new Hobgood Charter School opened in 2019 and offers Kindergarten through eighth grade enrollment.
North Carolina’s community college system is recognized nationally for its customized workforce training programs and offers a wide variety of occupational certification and continuing education programs. Halifax Community College serves the Roanoke Valley and offers technical and vocational education programs, college transfer, and associate degrees in many areas of study. Halifax Community College is an important partner in support of business recruitment and expansion efforts by providing customized training programs to meet the needs of business and industry in the area.
Within a forty-minute drive are Chowan University and North Carolina Weslyan College. North Carolina State University (NCSU), the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH), North Carolina A&T State University (NCA&T), Duke University, and East Carolina University are easily accessible and located within a 90-minute drive.
