Building Momentum for Future Passenger Rail in Weldon

Halifax County partners are taking another important step toward positioning Weldon for future passenger rail opportunities through the launch of the Weldon Mobility Hub Feasibility Study.

The effort is a partnership among Halifax County, the Halifax County Convention & Visitors Bureau, and the Town of Weldon, working in coordination with the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) Integrated Mobility Division. The study will evaluate potential locations and concepts for a future mobility hub that could support passenger rail service and expanded transportation options in Weldon.

The Town of Weldon has a long history as a transportation center for northeastern North Carolina. While passenger rail service no longer stops in Weldon, both freight rail and Amtrak passenger trains continue to travel through the community daily. Local leaders see the study as an opportunity to improve long-term access to jobs, education, healthcare, tourism, and economic development opportunities while preparing the community for future rail investments.

Stantec has been selected by NCDOT as the consultant for the project. Over the next several months, the team will work with local partners and the public to evaluate potential sites, identify mobility hub amenities, assess infrastructure and accessibility needs, and develop conceptual plans and implementation strategies. The study will also include community engagement activities and analysis of future transportation connections, pedestrian access, parking, multimodal transportation options, and economic development opportunities surrounding the preferred site.

The Weldon Mobility Hub Feasibility Study represents another example of regional collaboration focused on long-term economic competitiveness and connectivity for Halifax County and northeastern North Carolina. Local partners are committing $100,000 to the effort and believe this work will help position Weldon as a future transportation gateway, creating a stronger, more connected community for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.
